The BMW PGA Championship is the flagship event of the European Tour and has been won by many of the game’s most successful golfers since it’s inception in 1955. The event is played on Wentworth Golf Club’s West Course and Wentworth is also the location of the PGA European Tour’s headquarters. This, coupled with the fact the prize money is so generous makes the BMW PGA Championship such a key event in the European Tour calendar. It’s also a very important event as far as the Official World Golf Rankings are concerned, with at least 64 ranking points on offer to the winner.

BMW took over sponsorship of the tournament in 2005. A number of different companies have sponsored the event over the years including Volvo, Whyte & Mackay, Sun Alliance, Colgate and Schweppes. The total prize fund up for grabs during the tournament is €4,500,000, a figure only eclipsed by the Dubai World Championship.

Simon Khan won last year’s competition with his six under par score by one stroke from Fredrik Andersson Hed and Luke Donald. This was by far the biggest win of Khan’s career and only his second on the European Tour. He previously won the Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open in 2004. Only eight golfers have won the BMW PGA more than once and Nick Faldo is the only player to have four victories to his name. Colin Montgomerie is the only player to have achieved three consecutive wins in this event, claiming the title in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Taking part in the 2011 championship will be Richard Wallis. Richard is sponsored by us here at The VIP Gambler and he won the 2010 Southern Region Order of Merit. Richard won thirteen events during the 2010 tour and had 33 top ten finishes from the 52 events played illustrating what a very consistent and talented golfer he is. It will be interesting to follow his progress throughout the competition.
