North Middlesex Golf Club’s very own Andrew Johnston has qualified for this year’s Open Championship following a tough qualifier at Royal Cinque Ports.
Johnston only turned professional in 2009 and has built on a solid start to his pro career by qualifying for the British Open. He had to wait till the fourth play off hole to secure his place and now plans to hit the course at Sandwich as soon as possible.
“It does not feel real yet. I am going to go straight to Royal St George’s now to have a look and see if they might even let me play,” said the 22-year-old Londoner.
“I have only played there once before and that was when I was about 14.
“In the play-off I thought we might be playing for a couple of weeks – I had a couple of chances on the first few holes but hit a lovely shot on the fourth extra hole.
“I want to give a big thank you to all the members at North Middlesex, it is where I started playing and I am still attached.”
Andrew Johnston was born in 1989 and hails from Friern Barnet. His home club is the North Middlesex Golf Club and he is sponsored by Shaun Reddin. Andrew is coached by Neil Jordan of Sudbury Golf Club.
The VIP Gambler believe Andrew could be one outsider to watch out for at this years Open.
In 2009, Andrew turned professional and soon had a first career victory under his belt following his win in The Warwickshire on the Jamega tour. 2010 saw Andrew manage an 11th place finish in the European Tour School First Stage at The London Club. He made his European Tour debut in the season opening ‘Alfred Dunhill Championship’ this year and also had a 3rd place finish at the Karten Golf Open in Austria.
Andrew is on offer at 1000/1 for British Open victory with Skybet who are paying out on the first five places at the Open Championship.
