Greece v Russia Betting Preview & Tips

Greece v Russia (Group A)
16th June 2012, 7.45pm, BBC1, at The National Stadium, Warsaw

The sixth and final game in Group A sees the 2004 European Champions Greece take on a formidable Russian side. While Russia are much more fancied to win the tournament than Greece, I don’t believe the divide is quite as big as the bookmakers believe. Greece were impressive during their qualifying campaign and Fernando Santos’ men can provide a tough test for the Russians here.

Whether Greece will be able to perform to the level the level they did eight years ago is doubtful, but the current odds of 80/1 about Greece winning the 2012 European Championships are somewhat of an insult.

They finished unbeaten in qualifying Group F, two points ahead of hot favourites Croatia and yet the bookies rate the Croatians as more of a threat to this year’s European Championship crown. Greece pulled off a shock in 2004, they might well progress further than most pundits believe this time around too.

Russia are a very solid outfit and it would be no surprise to see them reach the latter stages of Euro 2012, as they did in 2008. Now ranked as high as 11th in the world by Fifa, Russia have some very dangerous attacking players as well as a solid defensive line. The Russians are going to be stiff opposition for whoever comes up against them. I fancy them to just have the upper hand in this encounter.
