Portugal v Netherlands Preview & Tips

Portugal v Netherlands (Group B)
17th June 2012, 7.45pm, ITV1, at The Metalist Stadium, Kharkiv

The penultimate match in Group B features two of the most exciting teams in the whole competition as Portugal face off against the Netherlands at the Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv.

Netherlands start the match as favourites but it could be a wide open contest thanks to both the teams playing a fairly open and attacking brand of football. With this group being so competitive, we are likely to see a number of high quality games, but there is a good chance this one could well steal the show.

Captain Cristiano Ronaldo provides Portugal with a player that can change games in the blink of an eye, no matter what the standard of opponent.

Real Madrid’s star man  is out on his own as far as the Portugal squad is concerned however and he can’t continue to carry the team like he has done in recent years if they are going to achieve anything meaningful. Manager Paulo Bento will expect his side to perform better than they did during qualifying for the tournament.

The Netherlands won their group during the qualification process with a return of 27 points from their ten games played and are currently ranked as one of the top four teams in the world by Fifa.

Bert van Marwijk’s squad is definitely one of the best on show at the 2012 Euros and  there is no reason why they can’t go one place better than their World Cup final appearance of two years ago. The Dutch have the right mix of talent, youth and experience, and are going to be difficult to beat throughout the tournament.
