The League Cup always throws up a shock or two making it a great competition to profit from good value odds. Tuesday’s third round fixture list has several ties with lower league teams that look over-priced.
Preston are available at 15/8 to beat Championship side Middlesbrough at home. The Lilywhites have already seen off second tier opposition in the opening two rounds, with Graham Westley’s side reserving some of their best performances of the season for the competition.
Huddersfield were bested 2-0 in early August, while Crystal Palace were on the receiving end of a 4-1 drubbing at Deepdale so there is plenty of form to warrant taking on those prices.
Likewise MK Dons are 5/2 to knock out Sunderland at home. Dons come into the match in good form having beaten Bury 4-1 on the weekend, whereas the Black Cats remain winless in the Premier League thanks to West Ham’s stoppage time equaliser last time out.
Karl Robinson’s team upset Blackburn in the second round, also at the Stadium MK. Martin O’Neil deployed a full-strength squad for their 2-0 win against Morecambe in the previous round but that had more to do with blooding the new arrivals at the end of the transfer window rather than a sign of intent for the competition and don’t be surprised to see the Northern Irishman rotate for tonight.
Elsewhere, Swindon are the stingy price of 6/5 to beat Burnley at home. The Robins knocked out Stoke in the last round and they come into tonight’s match on the back of two consecutive victories, including a 4-0 rout at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.
While for the brave punters out there Wolves look over-priced at 9/1 to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Championship side are riding on the wave of three consecutive victories and with the small matter of the Champions League taking priority Roberto Di Matteo is likely to rotate his squad for the match.
