Wigan v Chelsea
Sunday 19th August 2012, KO 13:30
Wigan face a tough opening fixture against Chelsea in this weekend’s Sunday lunchtime game. Wigan finished last season as the Premier League’s in form side and Robert Martinez will be desperate for them to carry that into the new campaign and not get off to a slow start as is their norm. Chelsea are coming off the back of winning the Champions League and have made some excellent signing during the summer.

Robert Martinez’s Wigan side started last season’s Premier League campaign very sluggishly indeed but just when their relegation fate looked to be sealed, they found their very best form. Suddenly, Wigan looked like a top six side rather than one battling relegation and they ended up winning five of their last six games. Whether they can start the way they finished is open to serious debate however going on previous years.
Roberto Di Matteo won the Champions League just a few short months into his tenure as caretaker Chelsea manager, and won himself the job on a permanent basis as a result. Roman Abramovich realised his dream of winning the biggest prize in European football with his beloved Chelsea and Di Matteo has been given the chance to prove it was no fluke.
The way that Wigan finished last season, they may well be the value here. I’m going for the draw at 3/1 because I think it will take a bit of time for Chelsea’s new signings to settle in, and I fancy Wigan to start this season a little better than they have in years gone by.
