Everton will look to bounce back from their League Cup humbling at the hands of Leeds United when they entertain Southampton on Saturday.

David Moyes’ side have enjoyed an uncharacteristically blistering start to their league campaign to sit third in the table and were it not for some scandalous officiating incompetency against Newcastle the Toffees would be level in second place.

In comparison newly promoted Southampton have not received much for all their early season bluster, but they did open their win column with victory against Aston Villa last weekend.

Unsurprisingly Everton are the clear favourites at a minuscule 2/5 and while a home victory does look odds-on it is hard to justify throwing your lot in with that price.

The bookies have taken no heed of the Merseysiders’ midweek performance in pricing up the match and for good reason. While Everton were awful, utterly awful, at Elland Road they were missing several first-teamers, none more so than Leighton Baines who so much of their play is directed through.

With Baines back in the team and a raucous Goodison Park crowd baying for emotional recompense after Tuesday Everton will be a different beast all together.

The home -2 handicap is a workable 11/4 and gets the vote. Everton covered this line last week against Swansea indulging in a profligate approach to goal.

Southampton have previous for having a communist approach to defending – see Arsenal away – and the 7/2 for Everton to score over 3.5 also gets a small-stakes nod.
