2012 The Tour Championship Betting Tips & Guide
Golf Betting Tips
This week’s action on the PGA Tour comes from Atlanta, Georgia in the shape of the 2012 Tour Championship by Coca-Cola. First played in 1987, The Tour Championship has been the final event of the FedEx Cup since 2007. With a total of $8,000,000 up for grabs in the prize fund, this is one of the richest tournaments on the PGA Tour. Four time Tour winner Bill Haas took the title last year following a playoff victory over Hunter Mahan. Haas doesn’t have enough points to make the illustrious field in 2012, and it will be Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods leading the way where this year’s Tour Championship is concerned.
The East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia plays host to this year’s Tour Championship. The course has a par score of 70 and stands at 7,154 yards in length. The Tour Championship was first held at the East Lake Golf Club in 1998, and has been it’s permanent home since 2004. Donald Ross designed the course and the record score is held by Zach Johnson with his round of 60 posted in 2007. Johnson is a 33/1 chance with Betfred to take this year’s title.
4/1 favourite Rory McIlroy has the FedEx Cup at his mercy coming into this Tour Championship. If he wins here in Atlanta, McIlroy will take the FedEx title, but he can possibly finish as low as 29th and still be crowned champion. McIlroy has been in outstanding form in recent weeks, winning three of his last four events and is a worthy favourite for the Tour Championship this week.
My first pick for the 2012 Tour Championship has to be the course record holder Zach Johnson. He looks very over priced to me at odds of 33/1, having already taken two events on this year’s PGA Tour. Johnson is ranked 10th on Tour for driving accuracy and is more than capable of winning here.
At shorter odds, Phil Mickelson appears to be hitting form at the right time and might just be able to upset the front two in the market of Woods and McIlroy. Mickelson finished 4th at the Deutsche Bank Championship and followed up that impressive performance with a 2nd place finish at the BMW. He won the Tour Championship three years ago and should be one of the leading contenders again this time around.
