2012 WGC HSBC Champions Tips & Odds Preview

2012 WGC HSBC Champions Tips & Odds Preview

This week’s big golf action comes from Shenzhen in China and it looks like being a really exciting contest. The fourth World Golf Championship of 2012 is the WGC-HSBC Champions and gets under way on Thursday 1st November with the fourth and final round taking place on Sunday November 4th. A top quality field line up here, all targeting a successful climax to the 2012 season.

The Olazabal Course at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, China plays host to the 2012 WGC HSBC Champions. This is only the second time this event has been played at Mission Hills and last year, the course proved popular with players and fans alike. The Olazabal Course stands at 7,251 yards in length and has a par score of 72. As the name suggests, the course was designed by Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal and features a total of 151 bunkers!

Germany’s Martin Kaymer comes here as the defending champion having won the 2011 WGC HSBC Champions with a final total of 268 for his four rounds, giving a -20 score. Kaymer has had a slightly disappointing 2012 by his own high standards and has slipped to 35th in the world golf rankings. A great performance on the final day of the Ryder Cup may have given Kaymer’s confidence a boost however and he certainly comes into this event with and each way chance.

It may be a little unoriginal, but my first pick this week has to be the 10/1 market leader Luke Donald. The WGC events are generally won by a top class player and it is rare to see an outsider take one of these titles. With there being a ridiculous number of sand traps on the course, Donald is the safest bet this week. He also comes off the back of an excellent third place finish at the BMW Masters.

For an each way selection, it’s difficult to look past Irishman Graeme McDowell. He’s been very positive about his chances in the press this week and comes here off the back of a creditable showing in Shanghai. McDowell was third in this tournament last year and often has a good run at the end of the season.
