The Ryanair Chase is a relatively new addition to the Cheltenham Festival having its inaugural running in just 2005, but since being made a Grade 1 in 2008 it has regularly attracted a top class field and is certainly a good addition to the week’s racing.

Run on the new course over about 2 miles and 5 furlongs it is open to horses aged 5 or older and seventeen fences are to be jumped. Alberta’s run goes into the race seeking a hat-trick after landing the last two renewals which sees his trainer Jonjo O’Neill and jockey AP McCoy sitting alongside Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh as the most successful partnerships in the race.

The Irish are yet to win this race but they have a good chance of putting that right this year with Noble Prince and Rubi Light at the front of the betting, however I believe the prize will be heading back to Barbury Castle courtesy of one of Alan King’s inmates. Course and distance form appears to be essential to have a chance of winning the Ryanair and Medermit’s 2^nd in the Spinal Research Gold Cup off 157 back in December looks like one of the strongest pieces of relevant form on offer this season.

He just failed to give the smart Quantitativeeasing 12 pounds on that occasion with that rival now having to race off 153 in future handicaps, so it really was a top drawer effort from last year’s Arkle favourite. He was always struggling when sent off as market-leader at last year’s festival but the step up to two-and-a-half miles looks to be exactly what is needed. He is engaged in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Ascot on Saturday and the 12/1 should be taken before the weekend.
