Saturday’s horse racing action comes from Goodwood, Doncaster, Hamilton Park, Lingfield Park, Newmarket, Newton Abbot and Thirsk. There is also racing in Ireland from Galway. The big race of the day is the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood where some of the top fillies in the country compete for the £104,914 first prize. Channel 4 are showing a selection of the races from Goodwood, Newmarket and Thirsk, with plenty of action for armchair punters to enjoy.

2.05 Goodwood

Goodwood’s card gets under way with the Get Your Bet On At bluesq.com Stewards’ Sprint Handicap, a class 2 event open to horses aged three years and older. The race is run over a trip of six furlongs and there is £18,675 on offer to the winner. The 28 runners are headed in the betting by Dandy Nicholls’ veteran Tax Free at odds of 7/1.

This horse ran his best race for some time at York last week when finishing third. A course and distance winner, Tax Free gets to run off the same mark again today and appears to have sound each way claims. I’m going for another course and distance winner ridden by the in form William Buick, Oneladyowner.

He comes into this race fresh having been off the track since a below par effort at Windsor, but his record at Goodwood is excellent, with one victory and two placed efforts from three starts. At 14/1, the horse looks overpriced.

3.15pm Goodwood

The Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes is the big race of the day, a Group 1 event run over a trip of 1m 1f. Eight runners go to post to battle it out for the £104,914 first prize. The ultra consistent Izzi Top is the favourite for this contest at odds of 15/8.

John Gosden’s filly has won four of her last five starts, including a Group 1 event at the Curragh last time out. She’s still relatively unexposed having had just eight career starts and I think she’s the one they all have to beat. The main threat to Izzi Top is likely to come from the Roger Varian trained Nahrain.

She should come one for her run last time at Ascot and looked a seriously decent animal last season, winning a Group 1 in France and finishing second in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf. I believe that he Breeders is likely to be Nahrian’s main target again and Izzi Top should just have the upper hand here.
