Saturday Horse Racing Tips & Channel 4 Picks
Horse Racing Tips
Saturday’s horse racing action comes from Newbury, Ripon, Newmarket, Chester, Doncaster, Perth, Lingfield Park and Market Rasen. There is also racing in Ireland from Tramore. The big race of the day is the Group 2 Betfred Hungerford Stakes at Newbury over seven furlongs, where Richard Hannon’s Strong Suit will be aiming to land the £50,000 first prize. Channel 4 will be broadcasting a selection of the races from Newbury, Newmarket and Ripon, with plenty of action for armchair punters to enjoy.
3.05 Newbury
Newbury’s feature race of the day is the Group 2 Betfred Hungerford Stakes where a number of the top seven furlong horses in the country go to post. The race is open to horses aged three years and older and the ten runners are headed in the betting by the Richard Hannon trained Strong Suit.
This top class four year old is the highest rated horse in the race and was prolific last season, winning three Group races in total. He has been slightly disappointing this term with two runs in Group 1 company but the drop in grade and the conditions could well be in the horses favour and we should see an improved performance.
Chachamaidee won very nicely at Goodwood at the end of July and this improving sort from the Henry Cecil yard is one to keep on the right side of. She was unlucky when finishing second in the Windsor Forest at Royal Ascot and looks to be worth sticking with in her current vein of form.
Tipster’s Pick
Back Chachamaidee @ 4/1 with bet365
3.30pm Ripon
The William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap is a class 2 event run over a trip of six furlong. It is open to horses aged three years and older and a total of 20 runners go to post. This race is always a popular Ante Post contest for the betting public and they have made Richard Fahey’s Alben Star the 7/1 favourite.
He won at Haydock in early July before finishing a very respectable fifth in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood. This four year old Gelding is still relatively unexposed and is sure to be on the premises at the business end of the race.
I think the Tim Barron trained Colonel Mak could well give the favourite most to do and looks value at around the 10/1 mark. He followed up a confidence boosting win at Hamilton in a Conditions race with a a cracking effort in the Skybet Dash at York. A repeat of that should see Colonel Mak go very close and he’s solid each way material.
Tipster’s Pick
Back Colonel Mak each way @ 10/1 with bet365
