Saturday’s horse racing action comes from Newmarket, York, Chepstow, Hexham and Wolverhampton. There is also racing in Ireland from Fairyhouse. The pick of the days racing comes from Newmarket, who stage two Group 1 events as well as the Betfred Cesarewitch. Channel 4 are showing a selection of races from Newmarket and York. Below are our two best bets for Saturday afternoon’s horse racing action.

3.35pm Newmarket

The Betfred Cesarewitch is a Heritage Handicap run over a trip of two miles and two furlongs. 35 runners go to post and there is a huge winner’s prize of just under £100,000 up for grabs. The bookies are going 7/1 the field here, with the recent Chester winner Countrywide Flame heading the market. He won well last time and is allowed to race here under just a 4lb penalty. I think there may be better options elsewhere in the field but John Quinn’s runner must be respected. Dermot Weld won’t have come all the way to Newmarket for a day out, and I think Olympiad can land this huge prize for the Irish trainer. Olympiad comes into the race fresh following a 52 day break and won a competitive handicap here back in August with relative ease. He has been put up 7lbs for that victory but I don’t think it’s enough to stop this improving four year old.

3.45pm York

A six furlong race, the Coral Sprint Trophy Handicap is open to horses aged three years and older and there are 20 runners going to post. The William Haggas trained Heeraat is favourite to land the £46,688 first prize at odds of 6/1. This colt has won his last two starts and looked impressive last time out in a 20 runner event at this track. Heeraat is still unexposed and definitely looks to be on the upgrade. He shouldn’t be far away here. At bigger odds, I like the chances of 14/1 chance Sirius Prospect. He’s run fairly well this season without winning a race but has been given a chance by the handicapper after being dropped to a mark of 102. The horse won this contest last season off a mark of 101 and looks primed to run another big race. An each way bet should reap rewards!
