Wiggins last defeat of note in a time trial came in the 2011 World Championships in Copenhagen where the German Tony Martin was his better, and the Londoner put in two imperious time trial displays in the recent Tour de France.

The 32-year-old is no stranger to Olympic gold as well – he already has three, reaped from the track in Athens and Beijing, to go along with a silver and two bronzes.

And with his chief rival, Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara, a doubt after a crash in Saturday’s road race Wiggins looks a good bet to add to that tally.
