The Mansfield swimmer is aiming to defend her last remaining Olympic title after only taking bronze in the 400m freestyle.

Adlington (pictured) qualified for tonight’s 800m final in the fastest time, just 0.11 ahead of her main rival Lotte Friis and interestingly looked barely out of breath at the finish. She is the reigning world champion at this distance and will have 17,000 raucous GB fans willing her to gold.

GB won all three of their group matches, including a 1-0 triumph against gold medal favourites Brazil on Monday. Canada progressed from their group thanks to a 3-0 win over a weak South African side and a draw with world cup semi-finalists Sweden.

Hope Powell’s women are 10/11 to progress to the semis in 90 minutes.
